Born on September 16, 1890 (B.E. 2433), during the reign of King Rama V, Luang Phor Ngern was the fourth of eight children in a prosperous agricultural family in Don Yai Hom. His parents, Phram and Krong Duangpoon, recognized his gentle nature and sharp intellect early on, nurturing him with moral and religious teachings. Under his father’s guidance, Luang Phor Ngern learned Thai script, Khmer letters, and sacred incantations, which laid the foundation for his future spiritual practices.
Ordination and Monastic Life
Luang Phor Ngern was ordained on May 18, 1910 (B.E. 2453), at Wat Don Yai Hom by Phra Palat Huay. He received the monastic name Jantasuwanno and dedicated himself to studying scriptures, meditation, and traditional Buddhist practices. In his sixth year as a monk, he began practicing forest meditation and embarked on a pilgrimage (dhutanga) to enhance his spiritual discipline.
Community Leadership and Development
Luang Phor Ngern became the abbot of Wat Don Yai Hom in 1923 (B.E. 2466) after the passing of his predecessor, Phra Palat Huay. Over the decades, he transformed the monastery from a dilapidated state into a thriving community center. Key contributions included:
